One of the biggest reasons people start collecting Avios is the possibility of flying Business Class for a fraction of the cash price.
But one of the most common questions beginners ask is:
“How many Avios do I actually need?”
The answer depends on several factors, including:
- Destination
- Airline
- Travel dates
- Cabin
- Reward availability
- Whether you’re using a Companion Voucher
The good news is that Business Class is often much more achievable than people think.
The Biggest Mistake Beginners Make
Most people start by asking:
“How many Avios do I have?”
Experienced collectors ask:
“Where do I want to go?”
The destination should drive the strategy.
Not the other way around.
Before earning a single point, decide:
- Where you want to travel
- Who you are travelling with
- When you want to travel
- Which cabin you want to fly
Only then should you start working out how many Avios may be required.
Typical Business Class Avios Requirements
The exact figures change depending on route, season and availability.
However, a rough guide looks something like this:
Europe
Business Class within Europe can often require:
- 15,000 – 30,000 Avios return
New York
Business Class to New York often falls around:
- 100,000 – 160,000 Avios return
Dubai
Business Class to Dubai often falls around:
- 90,000 – 150,000 Avios return
Tokyo
Business Class to Japan often falls around:
- 140,000 – 200,000 Avios return
Remember:
These are examples.
Always check current pricing and availability before making plans.
Why Availability Matters More Than Avios
One of the biggest surprises for beginners is discovering that Avios are rarely the main problem.
Availability is.
You can always earn more points.
You cannot always find reward seats on the dates you want.
That’s why I always recommend:
- Pick a destination
- Check availability
- Estimate Avios required
- Build your strategy
Not:
- Collect points
- Transfer points
- Hope for the best
The Companion Voucher Advantage
A Companion Voucher can completely change the maths.
For many collectors, the best Business Class redemptions happen when a Companion Voucher is involved.
This can significantly reduce the Avios required for premium travel.
That’s why many UK collectors focus heavily on:
- British Airways Premium Plus
- Companion Voucher planning
- Long-haul Business Class redemptions
How I Think About Avios
I don’t think about Avios balances.
I think about travel goals.
For example:
Goal
Business Class to Tokyo
Questions
- How many Avios might I need?
- What’s the cash fare?
- Is availability good?
- Can I use a Companion Voucher?
- When should I start searching?
By answering those questions first, every point I earn has a purpose.
My Rule For Business Class Redemptions
Before booking any Business Class reward flight I ask:
Would I actually pay cash for this flight?
Why?
Because value matters.
A redemption costing:
- 70,000 Avios + fees
can be excellent value if the cash fare is:
- £3,000+
The goal isn’t simply to spend Avios.
The goal is to spend them well.
My Favourite Business Class Uses Of Avios
The routes I pay closest attention to include:
- New York
- Dubai
- Tokyo
- Doha
- Cape Town
These destinations often combine:
- Strong travel appeal
- Expensive cash fares
- Premium cabin opportunities
- Excellent value potential
Final Thoughts
Most people think Business Class travel requires a huge amount of money.
In reality, many travellers are accessing premium cabins through a combination of:
- Welcome bonuses
- Everyday spending
- Companion Vouchers
- Strategic planning
The key isn’t collecting the most Avios.
The key is collecting Avios with a destination already in mind.
